ACB Begins Fall Campaign for Accessible Emergency Alerts on TV
COAT affiliate ACB began a campaign for more accessible emergency information on TV in early 2009. ACB President Mitch Pomerantz notes that the most critical factor in preventing injuries and death in emergencies is time. Unfortunately, current FCC rules require only a tone to sound when emergency information is scrolled or crawled on TV. These text notifications about critical details of tornadoes, fires & other emergencies lack essential audio outputs and leave people with vision disabilities without access to vital information. People with vision disabilities must ask others or switch TV channels or turn on radios instead, wasting valuable minutes learning about the emergency. H.R. 3101 asks for this rule to be remedied!
