Deaf Actress Marlee Matlin Lobbies U.S. Congress for HR 3101

Academy award-winning deaf actress Marlee Matlin spent Thursday November 5, 2009 visiting House and Senate offices to lobby on behalf of HR 3101 as a spokesperson for NAD. She visited Rep. Ed Markey, (D-MA), sponsor of HR 3101 as well as Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology & the Internet. Other visits included Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR), Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI). Rep. Bart Gordon (D-TN) and others. Ms. Matlin emphasized the importance of Internet captioning and the provisions in HR 3101 for video description, hearing aid compatibility of smart phones and Universal Service funds for broadband Lifeline and for equipment for deaf-blind people. Ms. Matlin was accompanied by Rosaline Crawford and Shane Feldman of NAD, Karen Peltz Strauss for CSD, and Kelby Brick, AAPD Board Member and V.P. at Purple Communications, who sponsored Ms. Matlin's trip from California.

Ms. Matlin also spoke for HR 3101 the next day, at the FCC Workshop at Gallaudet University.
