COAT Affiliate AAPD Learns About Android and Accessibility

On November 18, AAPD staff learned about the Android operating system (or platform) available on many cell phones and how accessibility can be part of the applications available for free for consumers with vision and other disabilities.  Steve Jacobs, of the Ideal Group, Inc,  demonstrated a number of features in beta testing that his associates have developed such as an eyes-free dialer, eyes-free compass, and easy-captioning for live events on various Android platform cell phones made by HTC, Motorola & Samsung. He also showed how a cell phone can be loaded with the assistive technology tools needed by a particular consumer and how these can be uploaded whenever and wherever the consumer is, e.g., when a screenreader is needed at the public library.

While not yet marketed, many of these application-type tools provide the accessibility needed by people with disabilities in a world where mobile access to the Internet becomes ever more present.
