COAT Affiliate APT Launches National Broadband Resource Center
Representatives from several COAT affiliates attended and participated in the launch of the new National Broadband Resource Center (NBRC) on November 19, 2009, held at the NEA in Washington, DC. Panelist Mark Richert of AFB lauded the NBRC's goal to expand and develop adoption of broadband by underserved communities, including people with disabilities. For more info, see NBRC launch agenda.
Jenifer Simpson of AAPD moderated a "Consumer Needs & Technology Visions" panel. This focused on unmet consumer needs and how expansion of broadband adoption must involve relevant applications in areas such as worker training & jobs, health care, and education.The emphasis was on the needs of low income, aging, and disability populations. Jim Mueller of Georgia Tech's Wireless Research Center, focused on the need for universal design in adoption and development of applications. He also noted how fast is the growth of wireless broadband connection and how people with disabilities can slip behind as technologies converge. A second panel presented industry visions by Intel, National Cable & Telecommunications Association and Verizon.
A reception event later included presentation of Hadden Awards to three honorees. One award was presented by Karen Peltz Strauss of CSD to Professor Judy Harkins who heads the Technology Access Program at Gallaudet University for her extensive achievements in research on accessibility and standards in telecommunications for people with disabilities. Attending the awards event were COAT leaders from HLAA, NAD and TDI, among others.
