Washington Post: House acts to improve Internet access for disabled

WASHINGTON -- The House on Monday celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act by approving legislation assuring that the disabled have full access to the Internet and television.
"The ADA mandated physical ramps into buildings," said Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., sponsor of the bill. "Today, individuals with disabilities need online ramps to the Internet so they can get to the Web from wherever they happen to be."

On July 22, 2010, COAT affiliate NOD held an event to release findings from a new survey, The 2010 Kessler/NOD Survey of Americans with Disabilities. One finding is that, among thirteen key indicators ranging from employment and income to social engagement and life satisfaction, there is a significant technology gap. The report states (page 19):

National Association of the Deaf: H.R. 3101 Heads to House Floor for Vote, Asks Senate for Same

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) applauds and thanks the House Energy and Commerce Committee for voting favorably on July 21, 2010, for the “Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010” (H.R. 3101). Next, H.R. 3101 will be voted on by the members of the U.S. House of Representatives. After that, the NAD will ask the U.S. Senate to promptly pass H.R. 3101.
